Every Guile player in SF4 will encounter a hard fought Ryu matchup wherever they go. Its very important to know the ins and outs of this matchup because Ryu has many tools that get in Guile’s way to victory. Here are some quick key pointers.

-         Don’t get caught up in a projectile fight, this is one that you will surely lose for the most part, instead match a fireball when possible and then jump straight up (if within close quarters for Ryu to DP you if you had jumped towards) or jump in from far away. If possible, stay within the tip of Guile’s low forward range, match fireballs and then proceed to backhand Ryu’s hand while he recovers with towards and fierce punch.

-         Ryu’s best approach to a Guile is to always pressure with low forward 2in1 fireball, the thing that gives Guile such a hard time is when a Guile player jumps towards a Ryu that is right outside DP or standing roundhouse range, they will always go for a low forward 2in1 fireball setup.

-         Don’t back yourself into the corner while charging, make an effort to push Ryu into the corner.Advance yourself using his Sobat kick followed up by some pressure strings to keep Ryu guessing AND blocking. Guile must create a comfort zone for himself where he has the following options :

a. Guile can stay right up in front of Ryu and harass him with Sobats and back fierces, turning it into a pressure game with the option to play footsies when Guile gets right outside the low forward range. Guile’s low roundhouse sweep should be always used to punish a whiffed low forward from Ryu. Since a low forward will stuff Guile’s lunging roundhouse, keep an eye out and punish this move. Once you shut down that option, incorporate Guile’s lunging roundhouse, on counter hit you can tag on a back and fierce punch for mad damage and stun. When you have Ryu in the corner,knock him down and pursue with block strings with a pause at the end, just a chance to bait out Ryu to whiff a DP (which is usually the case).

b. Guile can also stay right outside his low forward range and play projectile wars  and backhand Ryu. It is also at this range that Guile must be weary of Ryu’s hurricane kick. A Guile player that becomes predictable will get HK’ed many times in this scenario, so please, mix it up and never ever do EX SB from that close (that’s guaranteed HK on reaction from that distance). It is also from this range that Ryu players will get the urge to jump in and attack. The moment Ryu leaves the ground for a jump, immediately react and throw him back to the corner.At this distance and dependant on your reaction, air throws are 90% free. They do good damage and they position your opponent across the screen whereas you can start doing a mean long distance zoning game. Mix it up with low fierces – air throws – standing forwards, as Ryu can mixup his jump in attack timing and hit you out of your low fierce.

  Maximizing Punishing is where you have your options to punish your opponent dependent on what you want to do with them afterwards. For example, you knock Ryu down with Guile, you walk up slowly and stick out a jab, you end up baiting Ryu to throw out a whiffed fierce DP. What most people will do is just walk up and throw, but since its a fierce DP, the recovery for Ryu is very long, long enough to the point you can land a level 2 Focus Attack.Upon landing a level 2 FA, proceed to do dash up low strong 2in1 into a roundhouse FK, if you’re in the corner, I would dash up and do standing fierce 2in1 into a jab SB, then link a low roundhouse for a knockdown and to also proceed to play more wakeup mindgames. Throwing is very bad in this situation because of its low damage output.

  Guile doesn’t have alot of  big damage scenarios, so when the moment arises, go in and do your damage. Another example I could think of is playing a long distance fight with Sagat and you bait him into jumping from afar with an early roundhouse, in an effort to tag you because he thinks you will low fierce that jump in attempt. When you see Sagat do that, land a level 2 FA, then dash in for the combo of your choice (preferably ending in a knockdown). The level 2 FA would have to be charged a bit earlier, assuming that you know your opponent is going for this.

  Autopiloting is a term that us players use when we get into that zone. This frame of mind is very normal with tournament level players. It is the point where the player becomes one with the character and everything comes out second nature, there is no thinking involved on the spot. The point where you hesitate and think on the spot is also the point where your opponent can turn their game on and switch the momentum into their favor. Autopiloting for me occurs when im rushing down, everything about Guile starts flowing and I can sense the opponent’s game start to slow up because they hesitate for a bit. I try to rush in and attack to no end when I smell fear. I attack and play my game very calm, knowing that builds my confidence. I am confident in every button press I do, knowing that it will lead up into damage and also shutting down your opponent’s offense as well. Having confidence while playing against your opponent is a big plus.

  Everything that encompasses Autopiloting revolves on you being confident with your character. Everything you have learned so far in the game has to be utilized to the utmost  potential. You have to be at the point where you can play your game at such a confident level that it seems like both of you are attacking at the same time, except that your opponent’s attacks miss while you dodge and weave and throw out attacks that land. Even if you get hit, your mindset during autopilot blocks that out and you can continue to play your game and still win.

  Well thats it for now, remember Im not here to baby you or to have you take my word 100% of the time. Im just trying to share all the knowledge I have amassed over the year playing SF4. Please take the time to learn and evaluate and innovate your game. 

  People  give me shit asking why I help out random people on the internet  and whatnot. I say it will help build the community and bring up everyone’s game. I really do hate playing people not up to par, so I do everything I can to help. One thing people forget is that people out there can steal my strategies and whatnot…fine..but you will never steal the mind behind it.
